Education of the whole young woman by today’s standards continues to be an ever-changing, ever-evolving commitment. At St. Teresa’s Academy, the term education means more than just academic readiness; it also involves the essential nurturing of the body, mind, and spirit.
Below are a few of the initiatives currently underway to support our students’ health and well-being.
Wellness Committee: As a subcommittee of the board of directors, the Wellness Committee works to bring awareness of better physical health to all students through education, counseling, and innovative ways of exercise.
Registered Nurse: An RN is available everyday to assist students with health and wellness related needs and issues.
Small Group Counseling: STA has partnered with outside therapists from Resolve Counseling and Great Oaks Therapy Center to bring students new and fun group ideas to help manage stressors and other events in their lives. This is a great way to take advantage of counseling services along with other students who may be experiencing some of the same challenges. All students are asked to complete a group counseling survey each year to assess needs and develop appropriate programming for our community.
SADD Club (Students Against Destructive Decisions): This club organizes projects to raise awareness and improve knowledge and attitudes about the serious dangers of drunk driving and other destructive decisions.
Sources of Strength: Sources of Strength is a strength-based, comprehensive wellness program that focuses on suicide prevention but impacts other issues such as substance abuse and violence. The program is based on a relational connections model that uses teams of Peer Leaders mentored by Adult Advisors to change peer social norms about help seeking and encourages students to individually assess and develop strengths in their life.
Think First: A presentation designed to prevent brain, spinal cord and other traumatic injuries through education, research and advocacy.
MOCSA: A presentation designed to prevent sexual violence in our community.
Healthy Living Club: A club for students that want to incorporate healthy living into their daily lives. During the year we will discuss ideas for healthy eating habits, practice mindfulness and do other fitness activities which may include yoga, dance, cardio, walking, etc. It is a place for students to release some stress and gather some tools to maintain a healthy lifestyle. New ideas and suggestions about how to keep a healthy lifestyle are always welcome!
Self-Care Club: A club that encourages students to engage in activities and habits that promote mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical health. We enjoy fun activities that are positive and focused on taking care of our whole selves to be our best selves! Activities have previously included Just Dance, yoga, gift swaps, and more.
