November 19, 2021

The St.Teresa’s Academy High School Athletic Department announced the appointment of Katherine Williams as the new head varsity track and field coach. Williams is a graduate of St.Teresa’s Academy High School (‘07), where she was a four year varsity track and field letterwinner. She continued her education at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) on a full division I track and field scholarship. While at UMKC, Williams was a veteran jumper, leading the women’s squad her sophomore through senior season. She scored key points for her team at the 2011 Summit League Indoor Conference Championships in Fargo, ND. (6th place) and Summit League Outdoor Championships in Toledo, OH (5th place) in triple jump. Williams also achieved Summit League Winter/Spring Academic All-League team accomplishments. She was appointed captain of the track and field team by her coaches and teammates her senior season. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Communications Studies and a Master’s degree in Higher Education with an emphasis in Sports Administration and Exercise Science from UMKC.

While earning her masters degree, Williams continued to work in the UMKC athletic department as a graduate assistant in the  Sports Information department, where she frequently traveled and wrote stories for the track and field team. She also created the UMKC athletics department tv show The Kangaroo Sports Update. Williams was an employee for several years at Gary Gribble's Running Sports, where she connected with many runners in the Kansas City community.

Williams gained years of experience working for the City of Kansas City Missouri Parks and Recreation department as a Recreation Director where she provided weekly community based fitness programs at a local and national level for all age levels. Williams is a current International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) Professional Wellness Athlete. As an IFBB professional athlete, she has competed in several major cities inside and out of the United States.

Coach Williams has spent the last three years serving as the Assistant Athletics Director at STA and recently started as the Teresa Broadcasting instructor and served one year as the Assistant track coach specializing in the long jump, triple jump and sprints for STA in 2021 where the Stars placed third at the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) State Championships.

“We couldn’t be more excited to announce Coach Williams’ hiring,” Athletic Director Ty Abney said. “Coach’s time spent on campus has shown she’s an excellent leader, teammate and person. We’re so happy to have her and the rest of her staff guiding our young women and look forward to carrying on the spirit of STA Track & Field. I’m confident her experience and drive to educate our student-athletes on and off the track will be a great asset to our department.”

“Little did I know my high school years were shaping me for this moment to be coaching these student-athletes that I once was in their shoes. A lot has changed at STA since I was a student-athlete, but the mission and values of the athletics program has remained the same, which is to produce strong, intelligent, competitive young women,” Williams said.

“I am so blessed to have been mentored and guided by so many amazing women coaches from the STA and Kansas City community. I am so excited to see what the future holds not only for our track and field student-athletes but our athletics department as a whole, Williams stated.”

The track and field season begins February 28, 2022.
